Chapter 13

“What the hell have you done?” Brea whispered as she watched Draven finally sleeping peacefully.

His actions had caused her to seriously delay her departure from the cabin, which was risky at best. Raúl no doubt had his men combing the area, and it had been nothing short of pure luck that kept them from being found.

Nearly a week had passed since Draven had so stupidly bit her out of some mixed up desire to protect her from her godfather. She hadn’t needed his help. Christ! He had further complicated matters. What had she been thinking bringing him along? She should’ve known he would have stopped at nothing short of death to see her safe.

Since the first day she had walked into his nightclub, looking for Joseph, he had seemed to take it upon himself to be her knight in shining armor. His loyalty had mandated he follow his fallen friend’s wishes. Trouble was, she didn’t need saving. And she resented the fact he thought her so feeble he felt the need to turn himself into a bloodsucker … no matter how endearing his actions.

Then there was the sex.

It had been fantastic.

Thank goodness for Draven had sealed their fate when he took her blood, mating them. If by some miracle they walked away from this mess, the eternal binding couldn’t be undone. Even though she tried to remain optimistic, Brea wasn’t foolish enough to think they were above being taken out. Vampire or not, Joseph hadn’t had a fighting chance. If Raúl decided he wanted someone dead, then there wasn’t a whole lot they could do about it. He killed people without blinking, had done so for lesser sins.

Raúl wasn’t about to be thrilled with the idea she’d taken on another mate. They weren’t married, but Raúl wouldn’t understand the difference. There was no such thing as divorce, no walking away once mated. Only death ended the alliance. Joseph had probably thought he could handle the monogamy when he had agreed to protect her from her godfather by mating with her. He had failed … in a big way.

She glanced back at Draven. Sweat beading his brow was the only lingering indication he had gone through a near week of hell. The fire burning beneath his flesh and through his veins wouldn’t be something he’d ever forget. Joseph had held her through most of her change and absorbed some of the pain. She had tried to hold Draven, tried to soak up some of the agony. But it hadn’t worked. Maybe because the male was supposed to take care of the female. What the hell did she know? Brea rolled her eyes.

Typical.

Even as vampires, the men were chauvinists.

Thank goodness the worst of it was over. Draven would need nourishment. As would she. Since his turning, his blood could no longer feed her. She could drink from him, pleasure in it even. But the substance she needed to stay alive could only be found in a human. Brea would need to
